Location
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is in Quang Binh Province, north-central Vietnam. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its extraordinary karst cave systems.
When to visit
The dry season runs roughly February through August and is the main window for cave expeditions. Flooding between September and January closes many multi-day tours.
Getting there
Dong Hoi has an airport and sits on the national railway. Phong Nha village is around 45 minutes by road and is the base for most tours.
The caves
The park holds hundreds of caves, from short show caves accessible by boat to Son Doong — the largest single cave passage on the planet by volume.
Guided tours
The major expedition caves require licensed guides. Son Doong operates under a strict annual permit with a single licensed operator. Independent access is not permitted.
Money
Vietnam uses the dong (VND). Keep a supply of cash for the village; check with your operator which payment methods they accept for your tour deposit and balance.
